Has anyone heard anything about crafting in LOTRO? I've always liked the crafting aspect of games... I wonder how in depth it will be. Relatively non-existant like Guild Wars? Complex like Everquest2? What would you like to see?

I hope it's not like Guild Wars because there is not much to crafting in GW. I hope it will be complex.

I love crafting in a game. It's one of the most fun things I find in World of Warcraft. It adds a whole new element to the game. I hope they have crafting and that there are many crafts that can be well advanced.

i once played a game called Star Wars Galaxies, where all of the items and houses were player made. the availability of new weapons or armor depended on how many crafters there were. i would like to see something like that in this game, except also have weapon/armor drops from mobs. imho, a player built game iconomy was a good idea and id like to see it passed on

I really enjoyed the crafting experience in OLD Everquest. And that's the problem... I spent too much time trying to get my smithing skill up to enjoy the game... seemed like every time I was ingame I was at the forge (at least everyone knew where to find me LOL). However, once I got my smithing skill up over 200 then I started gaming again, but all my non-crafting guildmates were levels ahead of me. Now, maybe I was doing something wrong, which is not a stretch, but I'd like to see an easier way to get the crafting skill up and still be able to level with everyone else. Eh, call me picky.

I played Star Wars Glaxies too and I like the crafting in that too because you can customize your weapon so it is completely unique to anyone elses.

I would like to see a game treat craftsmen as an intended class.
IE. Warrior, Healer, Merchant, Craftsman...etc.
You could have secondary warrior skills but with a primary in crafting. Making it much easier to level in crafting, but with the ability to hunt and kill stuff.

Interesting concept that you have there. Although I'm not sure that it would be very popular with the vast majority, it would fit right in with the LotR Lore. After all, Samwise Gamgee was only a gardener and played a very significant part in the storyline.

Honestly I've never enjoyed crafting. I enjoy buying goods from player characters, but I have never enjoyed playing a character that just sits and crafts all the time. It just gets pretty boring for me. I like exploring. I like fighting. I enjoy sitting and roleplaying. But crafting I just could never get into.

Welcome to our forums Thejeni!
I enjoyed the crafting in Old Everquest basically because I knew there were rewards at the end for my paladin character: cheaper armor that I could customize and, of course, the selling of my product at the markets. Of course the in-game economy went into the tank after a while, making crafted armor fairly useless. It is quite annoying to think of the playing time I wasted trying to get my skill up, particularly because the rest of my guild just flew by me in levels. I really hope that LotRO can make crafting a lot easier. I'd like to see a variation of BuddaManX's idea, but giving a craft skill as a secondary skill that you can increase without the tedium of constant crafting. This would give more incentive to quest and explore rather than sitting at the forge all day.

Crafting IS boring, just go out and fight to make money, then buy armour off of people who actually LIKE to craft.

I really would like to craft armor and weapons so that I can customize my own and all the Grey Council's stuff. That will definitley be my secondary skill tree if available. I get excited just thinkin about it.

I would love to try out blacksmithing in RL (real life) so any game that lets me craft swords is gonna have to be a must try...
On that topic, anyone ever played the Gothic games? They were awesome, IMO. You could actually buy an iron ingot and perform the process of making a sword. Granted you got the same crappy sword every time, but it was still cool. Another great thing, when you killed some of the animal in it you could take their meat (it always resembled a chicken leg for some reason...) and of course it would be raw. However, if you went to a fire, you could actually cook the meat for a health bonus when you ate it. Good game...single player, but still quite awesome...

According to the F.A.Q. on the official site:

We are not discussing crafting at this time, but stay tuned! |
I doubt we'll see crafting on launch.

I realize this thread is a little old, but I just wanted to spread the good news that we will definantly see crafting in this game, and it is slated for launch as well. In a couple of interviews lately the info has started to be dangled in front of our noses. Tormenting us who truly love crafting in MMORPG's.
It is my belief that we will see some information about crafting, and possibly some video footage of it in action, at the upcoming E3 show in May. So all of you who like me, long for this information, hold fast!

why certainly, At LotroSource on Feburary 25th we posted this news flash from our newest creation, our LotroSource chatroom. We had a special visit from the OCR for the Turbine community Patience. You can read it HERE.
Also last week we had confirmation from Patience, that the newest dev on the team (coming from DDO) Nik Davidson, was working on a dev diary on crafting to be released within the coming weeks. Looking good for crafters in this title, thank God . *whew*

I can't seem to find your Feb 26 news. The current news page shows only March, and the archives don't show anything since May of last year. Am I blind, or just missing seeing a link somewhere?

Welcome to our forums, Odinseye. Nice to see someone from the 'Source dropping in. I would have welcomed you earlier, but work has been a killer lately.
Thanks for the links and info on crafting. I'm beginning to get pretty excited, as it feels things are drawing together over at Turbine. :)

I must say I was a tad dissapointed with the crafting element not being implemented in the game at first, but I do hope they include it, I beleive it's vital to LoTR.
Also, I was a little dissapointed about PvP not being included, but I guess Turbine need to stick as close as they can to the lore as possible. It wouldnt do having Elves and Dwarfs battleing it out in the streets of the Shire :S

aggreed.
I think that at E3 though we will see the unveiling of their plan to still find a way to "scratch the pvp itch" without doing harm to the lore. They have stated that they are working on something to satisfy in this regards. What it is, well thats still up in the air, but I feel that at E3 we might just find out.

Well Elves battling Dwarves .. thats not the problem .. it happened before ..only think about the Nauglamír!! Elves and Dwarves don't get along very well ..
A problem would be Elves vs Elves or Hobbits vs Anyone

I also think that crafting is alot of fun and hope that there will be many craft forms available with various levels that can be reached. I would also like for there to be some sort of set up where crafters can sell their items as vendors. For example, if I where a leatherworker for example, and someone was looking for some leather goods, I could open up a trade window with them and they could browse the goods I have available and the goods I can make with their corresponding prices! I dont know much about the technical side of things, but wouldnt it be fun to have your own store! :oD

I hope that crafting will be important. Like a tailoring craft so all avatars can hve clothes made from skins etc, or swords / Armour made from is mined.
Yep hope crafting is a big part of game :-)
