Preliminary data

Hey, I've just kinda "found out" about LOTRO recently, so I've been spending my time reading up on it. I have lots of time since I left my job....

Anyway, it looks like the official site is releasing some more detailed information. Their forums are funny, b/c I get the feeling that noone reads the releases before posting opinions. Silly kids.

So, if I take some of my time and "datamine" the official site for possibly useful gameplay info, can I submit it? Would it be an article, guide, forum post, misc.?

Just thought I'd help flesh out our home here.

Well how you can submit it would depend on what info it was. For example if you got some cool info on the classes or races, you could always post it in a thread here, and we could add it to those sections on the site, and get you some credit for it. Or if you wanted to submit something, you could create some kind article on something you found. I don't think there is enough info to create a guide on anything quite yet, but maybe you could find something *grin*.

We did just get our FAQs updated recently, but if you find some good tibits we could always add those in also.

Class Selection in LOTRO

I'm not sure where this belongs. I saw your "Classes" section didn't have much data, so I kinda wrote up a synopsis of what's been made available so far. Also, I put in some of my opinions, so I don't know if that makes more useful as an article or what, but here it is:

Class selection in LOTRO:

Even though Lord of the Rings Online has just entered the Beta stage, and current participants are bound by the Non-Disclosure Agreement, there is still some good information to be found out there for those who wander.

Turbine has been periodically updating the available information for playable classes. Barring Beta changes, we can now begin to plan our adventures. Please keep in mind that all information contained herein is subject to change at the whim of Turbine.

The Champion-
Character Equivalent: Boromir, Eomer
What they do: The Champion is the weapons-master of Middle-Earth. It is known that Champions will focus on offensive combat, being primarily damage dealers. Champions will have access to various armors, but will most likely be less effective at wearing them than a Guardian. A Champion will be able to use two weapons at once, but should be effective with a sword-and-shield style as well. A Champion’s primary place in a Fellowship is to quickly dispatch adversaries so that they may not harm companions.

The Guardian-
Character Equivalent: Possibly Gimli
What they do: The Guardian is to defense what the Champion is to offense. Guardians will have access to various weapons and armor. They will also be the most effective class at wearing the heaviest armors. Where the Champion is aggressive in combat, the Guardian is reserved. A Guardian knows that given time, opportunity will present itself. Thus, the Guardian’s attacks tend to be reactionary to the current combat situation. A Guardian’s primary place in a Fellowship is to keep the adversary’s focus on him, so that his companions can take advantage of openings to dispatch the enemy.

The Captain-
Character Equivalent: Aragorn, Faramir, Theoden
What they do: The Captain is comfortable as the leader of others. This does not mean that a Fellowship need necessarily be lead by a Captain. Instead, the Captain is there to inspire his companions to greater glory. Whether it’s boosting a flagging morale or driving their troops to impossible feats, the Captain is a symbol of hope. Captains are no stranger to combat but do not expect them to have the prowess with sword or shield that the Champions and Guardians possess. A Captain’s primary place in a Fellowship is to provide support to his companions. That support can come in the form of an extra blade or a kind word to make the fatigue melt away. Captains will be best known for their ability to plant a banner on the field of battle to inspire their troops to new heights.

The Burglar-
Character Equivalent: Bilbo
What they do: Don’t confuse a Burglar with a Thief! They may have some similarities, but it appears that being a Burglar will require you to be a bit more cerebral. The Burglars of Middle-Earth use their brains and mouths to meet their needs. They understand that an unseen attack on a weak spot can be more damaging than charging headlong into the fray. They also know that a confused enemy is easy to demoralize. Thus, expect Burglars to be gifted in their ability to hit where it hurts and use their wits and words to reduce an enemy’s ability to defend itself. A Burglar’s primary place in a Fellowship is to use their unique talents for mischief to aid allies and hinder foes. Burglars would be wise to only attack when they’re sure of scoring a hit. Instead, why not point out the flaw in the opponent’s armor or throw a bit of sand in their eyes?

The Hunter-
Character Equivalent: Legolas
What they do: The Hunter is the woodsman of Middle-Earth. Hunters spend much of their time among the forests and animals that roam wild. It is not uncommon for Hunters to take a predilection to archery, but that is by no means all they are good at. Hunters are, of course, skilled at wilderness survival. They can find meals and shelter, paths that are easily trod, and can trap game and enemies alike. A proficient combatant, Hunters would nevertheless prefer to remain out of direct harm. Be warned fantasy veterans, Hunters at this time possess only KNOWLEDGE of Nature, not AFFINITY. This means that Hunters have no mystical ties to the land, and we have been warned not to expect things like pets and animal communication! A Hunter’s primary place in a Fellowship is as a supporting combatant. Hunters can kill and demoralize quickly, but need to be sure not to draw too much attention, for they do not have the skill for prolonged close combat! A knowledgeable Hunter can be a Fellowship’s most valued member on those long walks through the wilderness. The Hunter will keep their friends alive and get them where they’re going, maybe even in time for Second Breakfast!

The Minstrel-
Character Equivalent: Ummm….none
What they do: Minstrels are the eternal optimist. Their words and outlook can be contagious, and their attitudes are reflected in their friends and enemies alike. Through word, verse, and song the Minstrel is able to raise flagging morale, increase intensity, and hone concentration in their allies. Likewise, enemies can be demoralized, caused to drop their guard, or flee in panic. A minstrel prefers to let his words speak louder than his actions, but understands the need to smash heads when nothing else will work. A Minstrel’s primary place in a Fellowship is outside of combat. Middle-Earth relies upon the Minstrel as the primary source of morale-boosting speeches. A silver tongue can be a dangerous weapon, but only so long as it is still attached! (It is unknown at this time whether the Minstrel’s abilities will be speech/verse driven, music based, or some combination of the two.)

The Lore-Master-
Character Equivalent: Elrond
What they do: Lore-masters use the accumulated knowledge of generations to work their way out of trouble. Ancient tales may hold the weakness of some dark foe, and the Lore-master will be your best bet for knowing those tales. Lore-masters know which herbs heal and which harm and are adept at out-thinking most any foe. Take note that Lore-masters are not magicians! While knowledge is power and mystical in and of itself, you will not be firing off bolts of lightning or tongues of flame.

We are still working on getting the pictures to say "Click here for more info". I'm not quite good enough with photoshop for it to be a quick task for me *grin*.

RE: Preliminary data

I could help with stuff like that.

I thought about applying for staff, but I wasn't sure which position to apply for and neither do I want to be "hired" and no longer eligible for the beta contest. /laugh
