The Hobbit Movie

Looks like the people in charge decided they didn't want Peter Jackson and them to do it after all. You can read about it in this letter here:

http://www.theonering.net/staticnews/1163993546.html

Personally I think it's crap. Just cause some company wants to hurry up and make money. At least that's what it seems like to me. Regardless, I hope it's produced at least as well as the other ones were if not better. If it ends up worse, then I forsee a bit of fan hatred all over MGM and New Line.

RE: The Hobbit Movie

Wow, thats very disappointing.

I know there is some division amongst fans about PJ and the direction he took the films. But I have to say that I was looking forward to seeing him create The Hobbit.

I loved the tone and the settings in PJ's films. I think there was great attention to detail and a very obvious passion for the books. I dislike some of the changes made to the plot, but I still wanted to see more from PJ. The continuity between the trilogy and the new movies is important to me, so I'm apprehensive about what to expect from a new CGI house, new director, and most likely a completely new cast.

But thats Hollywood for ya. The almighty dollar outweighs integrity too often. Sounds like New Line doesn't want the audit to go through, so they are calling PJ's bluff. Just my opinion, though.

RE: The Hobbit Movie

Oh wow. Who knew there was so much drama behind the scenes. I thought that was supposed to be saved for the big screen.

Here's hoping someone starts producing The Hobbit soon, and it is good. Although I do have to say, it won't be the same if Jackson doesn't do it. I don't think another director would be able to make it flow into the other movies that are out already.

There's even a site to sign a petition either way, if you do or if you don't want Peter Jackson on the project.

http://www.theonering.com/petition/

Right now it is 135 to 5 in favor of him doing it.

RE: The Hobbit Movie

I'm really loving the power of the internet. I've seen movies get made (like Joss Whedon's 'Serenity') and TV series be reborn because of it.

I hope this will be another example of the power of us 'net geeks. =D
Listen to your customers, New Line! Can we bribe you with cookies? It works here. ; )

RE: The Hobbit Movie

I could be wrong but I think this is all related to some litigation between Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema regarding how he was going to be compensated from the Trilogy. This whole mess may fall into the realm of lawyers and agents more than the creative forces that bring joy to the audience.
Oh you set me off topic but I have to agree that Serenity and the B5 Direct to DVD movies that may start shooting soon are good examples of the power of the Internet and a committed fan base bringing about meaningfull change. I am still pained by the fact Serenity did not do better at the box office. Ok back on subject can anyone find Tom Bombidill and send him to the next board meeting to get this Hobbit project moving again. ;)

Yes, the latest news truly disappoints! Hopefully New Line will change their tune, but I'm afraid they won't... so much for the hopes of a good movie.

RE: The Hobbit Movie

I am very skeptical about the quality of a Hobbit film made without Peter Jackson. It's too bad that business has to get in the way like this.

I wouldn't write it off just yet, though. It's possible that this is just a ploy by New Line to see if they can make the accounting lawsuit go away. They know how much PJ wanted to make Hobbit.

RE: The Hobbit Movie

That sounds very plausible to me, as well. They probably are hoping that they can withhold 'The Hobbit' to manipulate PJ into dropping his suit and giving up on the 100 million he feels he is still owed.

I tend to believe PJ in that instance. If NewLine really believed they didn't screw him out of that money, they wouldn't be so afraid of the audit. If PJ were trying to weasle money out of them he isn't owed, the audit would show that.

NewLine gains nothing this way. Handing over 'The Hobbit' to a new director is risky and now they still have to deal with PJ's lawsuit. I think they are making a poor decision here.

RE: The Hobbit Movie

I'm not so sure that a new director is such doom-and-gloom. There ARE other people who can do a wonderful job. The main reason for bringing Jackson back would be continuity. The Hobbit would flow into LOTR better.

Continuity isn't all it's cracked up to be. How many of you are Harry Potter fans? It's quite obvious that not all 4 currently released movies were produced and directed by the same people. But do you care? The content is what you care about, right?

I'll admit, Jackson let me down in the content department in LOTR. Personally, when I see a book turned into a movie I have certain expectations. I will allow changes to run in a decent time frame and to compensate for the inner monologue of the written word. Other than that, you better have a DARN good reason. Jackson made a lot of plot changes, seemingly for no reason. Ummm.... did Aragorn HAVE to wait until the last minute to get his Sword +8 of Sauron Slaying? What plot device did that serve? I know he killed off Saruman b/c he didn't like the false climax ending, but by doing so he loses one of the key messages of the whole dang series!

An absence of Jackson may not wreck continuity all that much either. New Line can still bring back Ian McKellum for Gandalf and still owns the rights to a digitized Gollum. Andy Serkis can still do the voice. Elrond could return. Bilbo would have been replaced anyway, as the actor was way too old. Noone else was in The Hobbit that made it to LOTR that I can remember.

All I'm saying is, it may not yet be time for
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

I'm not saying doom yet. But I can't see it going well. Then I've never been the optimistic type when it comes to this. I wouldn't be suprised at all if New Line just went with another director.

RE: The Hobbit Movie

Well, this is certainly good news. It's not that another director wouldn't be able to do the films, but I'd like the look and feel to remain consistent across the board. Changing directors would virtually guarantee a different look and feel. If things go well and Jackson is allowed to continue working "in Middle Earth" then the series should wind up becoming seamless over the five movie span... who knows? Maybe someone should get ahold of Chris Tolkien and try to secure the rights to the HoME set! LoL J/k!

As for getting someone else to play Bilbo, I think Ian Holm would be fine. Remember that the One Ring preserved him so that he seemingly hadn't aged a day since it came into his possession, so he would look pretty much the same as he did at the beginning of the trilogy.

RE: The Hobbit Movie

wow havent been to gameamp for months... anyways
There was never an plan for making the hobbit, it would be looked at as childish from the other 3 movies, + peter jackson is taking part in the first Halo movie, which is actually being directed by someone other than peter jackson, peter jackson is the producer. btw microsoft is doing the movie, fox and some other company backed out because the director had not done any full length films.... I got a bit off topic, sorry. Well thats my scoop :)

~~Lenway~~

btw Mel, I wouldnt want to be consistantwith who's directing the movie, changing directors (to me) is a stupid idea when its based on one series of books.

Better tell that to New Line / MGM... if they have their way, they'll exercize their rights to it within the next year. If not, then the rights revert back to the owner, who claims that he will have PJ do the movies if New Line / MGM haven't already done it.

Check the newswires lately? Microsoft shut the production down... at least for now. Who knows if they'll ever get it started again.

I agree, that was my point. But I still think that another director could make a decent movie. It just wouldn't be consistent, which I'd rather have. Read my post again. ;)
