Creating a successful Kinship

Concept.

In other words what is your kinship about? Why should people join your kinship? The clearer you make this the easier you'll find it to stand out from the others. Does your kinship have a theme? Is it just for craftsmen or elves etc? Are you more interested in getting organized for the monster play side of things? Sorting out things like that helps attract the right sort of member. Everyone wants to hit max level and have amazing gear, but what else do you do?

Good Leadership.

Communicate with your members or they will get fed up and leave. Make a special effort to welcome and talk to new members to help them settle into the kinship. This will make your members more likely to be active and stay in your kinship and when you are asking for donations for buying the kinship house they'll be more willing to help.

Get help. Recruit good officers, people who will help recruit, organize events, talk to and help kinsmen and women. Show doormats the door. It is not advisable to just pick your friends, they aren't necessarily going to help out and you'll be left doing all the work. You may well burn out if there is no one to take some of the responsibilities on.

Organize events and get everyone you can involved. Role playing events, sparring tournaments, etc just to get guild members in the one place for a while to chat and get to know each other. Chatting is one thing, but group events make for good memories and builds a closer kinship.

Time for the guild.

If you run a kinship devote some time to doing kinship tasks, sounds really basic but there are many people happy to make a kinship and do nothing at all with it. They don't chat to their members or anything, you have to wonder why they wanted to form one at all. At the opposite end of the scale remember that you are playing the game for fun, don't spend ALL your time doing kinship tasks. Take time just to enjoy the game doing other things, don't get bogged down and burnt out by the demands of running a kinship.

Rules & Recruitment.
There are 3 classic ways to run a kinship:

:: The Monarch – the founder is all powerful and decides everything, takes all the responsibility for running the guild.

:: The Republic – Founder + Officers run and shape the kinship.

:: The democracy – All members get a say in running and shaping the kinship.

Ranks should be earned and given out consistently. Usually you have a rank for newbies, full members, veterans then officers. You can reward people who manage to rank up by giving them a mention on the MOTD, or kinship website if you have one, or even give them a gift of some sort – a piece of armor, some silver etc. This makes ranking up more meaningful and makes people who rank up feel more special.

When recruiting for your kinship make sure to mention your concept and any rules, e.g. you have to be at least level 20, or no alts etc, do it briefly though. You'll see a lot of kinship recruitment posts that look like this:

Founder: “New kinship “Lame Name” is now recruiting, if interested send me a tell.”
Apart from telling you the kinships name it really doesn't say anything at all. So what? Another new guild looking for members. Why should anyone join that one over the others? Tell them why you are great, and do it briefly. Don't send blind invites as that just ticks people off, send a tell first if anything, but stick to the aforementioned rules about advertising. Don't spam the chat channels when advertising. Keep an eye on the chat channels, some people will post looking for kinships from time to time, be ready to reply! These people are actively seeking a kinship and as such are more likely to stay in a guild and be active in it.

In brief:
:: Be inventive when you recruit. Don't spam. Don't send random invites.

:: Be welcoming and friendly. Communicate and encourage others to do the same.

:: Spend time helping others, but make sure you get time to do things for yourself too.

:: Make sure you have a good ranking system and helpful officers.

Exacllent guide, I'm part of a kinship is quite democracical but with officers and the leader organising raids and quest nights. The key to our kin being great is communication, always greeting new members, saying hello and goodnight and other acts of companionship.
