Monster Play Overview
What is Monster Play?
Lord of the Rings Online offers a different perspective to the normal PvP aspects of MMO’s. In this new twist players will wage epic war in the mode known as Monster Play (or PvMP). There is a region of Middle Earth that is under constant direst and the battle never ceases. Here in the area called Ettenmoors, heroes from the Free Peoples and monsters of Angmar will fight in constant battle over control of the land. Players will have the choice to fight for the Free Peoples (as their own character) or for the servants of the Enemy (from an assortment of created characters).
How to play PvMP?
To begin MP you must first obtain the 10th level with your Free Peoples character. Upon reaching said level you can gain access to this unique PvP environment. Throughout the Free Peoples realms of Middle Earth you will find access points that will allow you to travel to Ettenmoors to being the fight. One such location of these access points is in Bree (Beggar’s Alley) and look for the Fell Scrying Pool. When you first access this pool you will be then given an option to choose from one of five characters (Spider-weaver, Orc-reaver, Uruk-Blackarrow, Warg-stalker, and Uruk-Warleader). All characters are level 50 and ready to battle. Also previously created characters can be accessed if not your first time in MP.
Additional Fell Scrying Pools are located in East Bree, Thorin's Gate, and Michel Delving.
While you can play MP at level 10, your actually hero character can’t compete in PvMP battle till level 40. If you wish to bring the fight and aid the Free Peoples, gain level 40 and then visit a stable master that can take you to the Ettenmoors.
Ettenmoors and You
When you first set foot in the region of Ettenmoors you will begin in one of two locations/bases (depending on your faction); Gramsfoot for monster play and Glan Vraig for the Free Peoples. These bases are safe spots and you will not or can not be attacked while in these areas. In addition to being safe you will find NPC’s that will give quest, skill trainer (Bards and Corrupters), and provisioners/grocers.
The Ettenmoors is a vast location with much to do and see; the area is roughly the size of the Shire. While you explore this region, you will also find battles of all sizes from one on one fights to epic confrontations for control over various points. These specific points will show on your mini-map who has control through the use of a flag (red for monster control and blue for Free Peoples). When you arrive to these locations be prepared for a fight for the faction who holds it will put up a struggle to not relinquish their foothold. Large groups are highly recommended when venturing into these spots. The actions you take frequently in the Ettenmoors will reward you with Destiny Points and Infamy/Renown.
Advancing through Monster Play
In your epic struggle over Ettenmoor you will be rewarded with various incentive. Below is a list of the ways to advance through Monster Play and gain rewards.
Destiny Points (DP): DP are points that you first started earning on your Free Peoples character at level 10 (then each level there after). These points can be spent on various attributes that will increase your characters abilities; like armor, morale, damage and XP enhancement self buffs or Perks (as they are called in LotRO). The perks last a short time and heighten your game play in Middle Earth. Both monster characters and your Free Peoples character can use these perks. Only in PvMP can monster characters earn Destiny Points throughout their adventures in the Ettenmoors.
To access your Destiny Points you can click on the icon that is on your Mini-map or on the main page of your Character Journal (these are the locations for both monster characters and Free Peoples).
Perks: As mentioned above, perks are rewards purchased through the spending of Destiny Points. These short lasting buffs will enhance your characters on many levels. Increased strength, speed, health, armor and XP increase are just some of the Perks you can purchase with Destiny Points.
Renown and Infamy: Depending on your faction; the wins and defeats you accumulate in PvMP you can earn Renown (for Free Peoples) and Infamy (for monsters) which is something very similar to experience. Whenever you defeat the opposition you will earn Renown or Infamy (dependant on rating of enemy). These earnings then will help you earn higher ranks, Infamy and Renown earnings are never lost. To check your Renown and Infamy you can access that information on your Character Journal under The War.
Rank: Rank will indicate your status of service to the respective side you have been fighting for. Free Peoples characters will see their standings and monster players will see what favors they have earned for their deeds to Angmar. There are 15 ranks available to earn for either the Free Peoples or the Enemy.
Rating: Fighting in the Ettenmoors is an arduous task and with your victories or falls you will be given a Rating. This rating can increase and decrease throughout your time in PvMP; wins and losses matter if you want to keep a higher rating. To earn higher score is dependant on your combatant’s rating and your rating.
Prestige: Prestige will indicate your PvMP rating and will appear as stars around your player’s portrait. |
